Biodiesel fuel can be used in its purest form or it can be blended with petroleum-based diesel fuel. Neat biodiesel, or 100 percent pure biodiesel, provides the most benefits for the environment and the greatest fuel savings. However, if you have large fuel needs and do not wish to produce large quantities of biodiesel to meet those needs entirely, using blended biodiesel has its advantages as well.

Biodiesel fuel has properties that lubricate and clean diesel engines. Consequently, even blended fuel with only 5 percent biodiesel content can produce positive effects on the life of the engine and reduce the need for maintenance. In this way, biodiesel is used as a fuel additive and can be blended with petroleum-based diesel in a variety of different ratios.
